What Is Vaping?

Although “vaping” has become a viable alternative to smoking, according to the owner of Blue Diamond Vapors, there has been a frustrating cloud of confusion and misinformation surrounding this increasingly popular trend.
But, let’s start by asking one basic question, “What is vaping?”

Vaping refers to inhaling and exhaling the vapor produced by compact vaporizers, or electronic cigarettes. Unlike a real cigarette, the electronic version produces a cloud of vapor, not smoke. The carcinogens present in the smoke produced by burning tobacco cigarettes poses known health risks, and most of the chemicals present in smoke are not found in the vapor produced by the electronic version.

The cloud produced by vaporizers is created by its battery operated heating element. Larger devices may have a longer battery life, while more compact versions are easier to handle and use. The choice really comes down to the user’s preference. Liquid nicotine, also called e liquid or “e-juice,” varies in its makeup but is generally a propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine-based liquid that contains differing amounts of nicotine and food-grade flavoring. The recipes for e-juices are highly proprietary, and are selected by customers based upon their varying characteristics. The flavors come in a dizzying array of options, and the concentration of nicotine can generally range from 0 mg to 24 mg. Propylene glycol carries the flavor better and produces what is known as a “throat hit,” while the vegetable glycerine creates more vapor.

For people new to vaping, it is recommended that they start with a 50/50 blend of propylene glycol and vegetable glycerine, and work toward different concentrations depending upon what concentrations of vapor and nicotine they prefer. The type of vaporizer they select also depends upon different factors, such as power, battery life, and ease of use. For example, a more powerful device produces a higher volume of vapor, and is meant to be used with lower nicotine concentrations.

As with any other lifestyle trend, vaping isn’t for everyone. If you are interested in trying it, do your homework to decide if it is something that you might enjoy. While some look to vaping as a safer alternative to smoking or as a vehicle toward smoking cessation, others simply enjoy it as a pleasurable activity.
